By Coach Steve Bearden , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The South Tama County girls' tennis team returned to the courts Tuesday and posted a convincing 9-0 win over the Grundy Center Spartans.

The Trojans began the dominating night by sweeping all three varsity doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Emily Martin and Madison Baack overpowered Sydnie Gutosky and Katelynn Coy in an 8-1 victory. Juniors Tori Appelgate and Regina Balderas remained undefeated on the season when they downed Sydney Hogle and Heather Lamfers at No. 2 doubles 8-2. Senior Leah Mann teamed with Caitlin Svacina at No. 3 doubles to down Michelle McIntire and Gabby Hame by a score of 8-1.

Playing in reverse order, junior Taylor Muhlstein took to the court first for the Trojans at No. 6 singles. She played a steady game to build an insurmountable lead against Kristen Kalkwarp. Muhlstein went on to win by a score of 8-0. Svacina remained undefeated on the season at No. 5 singles when she outpaced Abigail Taylor. Svacina notched an easy 8-1 victory.

Balderas matched up against Hogle at No. 4 singles. Balderas raced to an early lead in the match. She went on to record an 8-1 win. Appelgate took to the court at No. 3 singles against Lamfers. Appelgate's all-court game was too much as she quickly notched an 8-0 victory.

Baack faced off with Coy at No. 2 singles. Baack's steady baseline game put her in good standing throughout the match. She moved the ball well while revealing her opponent's weaknesses. Baack posted an 8-5 win for STC.

In the final match of the night, STC's Martin took on Gutosky at No. 1 singles. Martin and Gutosky kept pace early in the match to stay even at 3-3. Martin went up 4-3 before the two started trading service breaks in the next few games. Leading 5-4, Martin started to better read her opponent's slice backhand. She moved forward and started to hit down the line on Gutosky's side of the court. Trailing 7-4, Gutosky held serve to force Martin to serve for the match. Martin obliged as she closed out the match for a hard fought 8-5 victory.

Sophomore Sydney Meek posted a win in junior varsity singles for STC. She defeated Michelle McIntire 8-4.

The Trojans are 3-0 on the season. STC faces Union on Monday, AGWSR on Tuesday and Grinnell on April 26. All three matches are at home and start at 4:15 p.m.
