Are the days of family recreation on farms numbered?

Letter to the Editor:

Are the days of family recreation on farms numbered?

The recreational use liability protection bills, HF 605 and SF 413 are stopped for this session of the Iowa legislature unless the issue is attached as an amendment to another bill.

These bills would have restored landowner liability protection for free recreational use of farm property that has been in force for 40 years. The original law was passed in early 1970's. If a landowner let others use their property for educational use, (AG in the classroom) hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, mushroom hunting, bird watching Etc. The landowner is protected from liability. A case at the Iowa Supreme Court rule invalidated the 40 year old law.

Now landowners will be very careful about whom they let on their property. The losers in this case will be the people who want to use other people's property for recreation. If you are concerned about this, please contact your State Representative and State Senator and ask them to bring this up as an amendment to a current bill.
