Latinas/Latinos al Exito, an Iowa based non-profit organization with programming for students in the South Tama schools, is pleased to announce the hiring of Dawn Martinez Oropeza to lead Latinas/Latinos al Exitoas Executive Director effective March 1, 2013.
Oropeza brings a wealth of talent to the position, including broad-based professional and cultural networks. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, San Diego. A former Arts Education/ Community Programs Coordinator with the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, she has a passion for cultural heritage and the arts. Her prior experience with non-profit organizations will help her lead Latinas/Latinos al Exito effectively.
Diane Patton, of Rockwell City, and Vice president of the Latinas/Latinos al Exito board of directors led the executive director search team. Patton stated, "Dawn's leadership will assist our work in program expansion to additional sites, increased funding streams, leadership development, and progress toward a unified organizational plan that delivers consistent, high-quality programming."
Oropeza will be the first salaried leader of Latinas/Latinos al Exito, which gained non-profit status in 2010. The organization works with school districts with high Latino enrollment - recruiting students who need supportive relationships and programming to motivate them to succeed in school and plan for post-high education. Six Iowa school districts, including Belmond / Klemme, Clarion/Goldfield, Des Moines Public, Marshalltown, Perry, and South Tama, partner with Latinas/Latinos al Exito.
