Seeks military service dates for 17 veterans buried at Tama's Oak Hill

March 24, 2013
By John Speer - Editor , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

A search last year for an uncle's U.S. military service record inspired Dot Chmelik, rural Tama, to launch a much bigger research task. She began in July of 2012 and has recorded the dates of military service for all but 17 of the nearly 440 men and women who served their country dating back to the War of 1812 who are buried in Tama's Oak Hill Cemetery.

To find out date of enlistment and discharge for the last 17, she is seeking help from the public. Chmelik hopes relatives or friends of the service people can supply the missing information so the research will be complete.

When finished, Chmelik plans to make her record readily available for public inspection at the Tama City Hall, for the Oak Hill Cemetery Association, Tama County Historical Society Museum and Tama County Department of Veterans Affairs. This could serve as an aid to family members conducting genealogical research.

In addition, Chmelik says reading the list during Memorial Day ceremonies would be a fitting tribute.

She is quick to point out she hasn't worked alone in he task and recognizes the museum, Veterans Affairs, Tama City Clerk's Office along with assistance from her cousin, Darlene Brandt, nephew, Bob Hanus and daughter, Connie Chmelik in the effort.

Not only has the research involved pouring over records, but Chmelik recalls walking "all over the cemetery on 100 degree days" to search for dates sometimes inscribed on tombstones.

Chmelik has a bit of advice, too. She suggests those writing obituaries include the dates of military service in the story.

Dates of U.S. military service (enlistment and discharge) are needed for:

(Birth and date of death follow name, when known)
