Recent incidents of improper snowmobile operation within the Tama city limits have prompted Tama Mayor Dan Zimmerman to warn city rules will be enforced.
Primarily, snowmobiles can only be operated to travel directly from points within the city limits to the surrounding rural areas and the reverse- from outside the city to a location within the city limits by the most direct route.
Snowmobile operators must also have a valid driver's license and the sleds must have proper working equipment according to Tama Police Chief Dan Wilkens.
Both the mayor and police chief stressed the snowmobiles must not be driven on residential lawns or on sidewalks.
Zimmerman said the city could be forced to enact Department of Transportation rules for operation in the city if the travel restrictions are not obeyed.
This would prohibit their operation in Tama's city limits and would require operators to transport them by trailer.
Snowmobiles may be operated in the Off Road Vehicle Park on Tama's south side according to State conservation Officer Brett Reece.
The snowmobiles must be registered and the user fee for the park paid.
