A memorial to veterans in Tama's Oak Hill Cemetery is deteriorating and needs to be replaced. Members of the Oak Hill Cemetery Association aim to accomplish this task with your help. They've set their sights on having the work done by Memorial Day, May 27 of this year.
The monument sits squarely in the center of the cemetery on Tama's northeast side and is the annual site of Memorial Day services conducted by the Tama American Legion Post 73 and Tama-Toledo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6607.
Those are the groups who built the original monument in 1962 dedicating it to "the memory of those men and women who served their country in the armed forces."
A split in the masonry corner of the planter on the Veterans Memorial is part of the reason the Oak Hill Cemetery Association has launched a drive to replace the monument.

Now the bricks and mortar are giving way and an evaluation they sought from Tama contractor Kevin Turbett says it's time for the memorial to be replaced. Water through the years has contributed to the damage it was reported.
A fund drive by the Oak Hill Cemetery Association has a goal of $4,000 for construction of the new monument in the location.
To make a contribution send a check designating the Veterans Memorial Fund to the Tama City Clerk's Office, 305 Siegel, Tama, IA. 52339.
