Mary Boege brings 24 years experience as a school business manager to the post she filled on January 2 in the South Tama School District. Boege replaced Joanna Hofer who retired after more than four and one-half years in the position.
She says she has found "a very nice and efficient staff and administrative team" here.
Boege served from 1994-98 as the Garwin Public Schools and as Green Mountain-Garwin business manager following consolidation. After a stint as an office manager for a doctor's office in Marshalltown, she was business manager for Perry schools for one year and has spent the past nine years as the Grundy Center School District business manager.

Boege says "new challenges" with each position makes the work enjoyable.
She points to Federal Impact Aid, which is received by South Tama, as an example of a funding source she hasn't worked with before which adds an element of interest. The district receives payment from the federal government because it provides educational opportunities to some Meskwaki Settlement students. However, Tribal land is not subject to property tax which is a major school revenue source.
Right now, Boege said she is familiarizing herself with the South Tama budget for which preparations for the 2013-14 fiscal year will soon be underway.

In her role she also oversees accounts payable and receivable, food service budget, bidding, plays a part in contract negotiations and shares in managing buildings with Superintendent Kerri Nelson.
She received a business degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.
Boege's husband, Mike, is the plant operations manager at the Iowa Juvenile Home / State Training School for Girls in Toledo. The couple lives at Garwin.
Their children have followed in their mother's footsteps. Nick is a graduate of UNI and is working currently as a pharmacy technician while awaiting admittance to pharmacy school. Ryan graduated in December from UNI with a degree in Spanish education and is substituting teaching while awaiting a fall teacher opening. Daughter Jami is a junior at UNI majoring in physical education.
