Our Day of Service Event was at the Tama County Humane Society on Saturday January the 19th. Throughout the morning folks stop by to visit with the staff of the shelter, Sherri Vesely & Laurie & Carlee Schultz. They took us on a tour to see the two new rooms that will house cats & dogs. Volunteers, Patty Henle, Dawn Withrow & Dave Kasol brought the dogs & cats out for kids & adults to play & cuddle them. You could find kids inside the cat's kennels playing with the kitties or just sitting and cuddling with them. A special kitten, Stuart, was brought in as a stray several weeks ago. He was in poor shape, very skinny & after further examination they found that Stuart had an abcess in his jaw & the jaw was broken! With lots of TLC & doctor care, Stuart is doing much better. He was held, loved & cuddled by all. A beautiful long white hair Persian cat, Henry, found his forever home when he was adopted by Sandy Otte. Sandy was so excited & very happy to have such a companion to take home for her birthday! There was another kitty adopted and several more put on hold. It was so neat to have this happen on our Day of Service. Annie, a cute lovable dog, played a lot with everyone, went for a walk & she is available for adoption. Howard Manos took Scarlett, a black Lab mix, on a walk to burn off some of her energy. Now Chip, a large beautiful black & white pit bull, brought in from Ohio, went 8 blocks on a walk & was ready to go 8 more when tired Howard brought him back. There were a couple dogs on hold & some other waiting for adoption. It was noisy, busy and a joy to watch folks give up some time to volunteer & socialize with the cats and dogs. We learned a lot about the shelter and its needs while talking with the staffs, who give daily care and TLC to all the shelter's furry friends.
Others donated cat treats and canned food, kitty litter, & newspapers for the cats. Dry dog food & canned food, collars, leashes, rawhide treats for the dogs were donated. Others gave cleaning supplies, paper items, laundry soap, & some office supplies. There was some popcorn, drinks and oranges for the staff, when they took a time out. There was cash donations for maintence & up keep of the shelter. Local Union 743 members & Tama Paper Board members, donated cash to help sponsor the purchase of a dog kennel. This is a project anyone or group can do for the care & comfort of an animal.
About 11 of us met at King Tower for lunch and to share about our day. There were much laughter & fun stories with friends & neighbors. Carlee Schultz shared with us that a painting project needs to be done in the next two weeks. This would help get the dog room ready for the kennels that are to arrive in the next 4 weeks. So it was decided that a "Pooch Painting Day" would be planned. Look for further information in your local paper or on Facebook under Tama County Humane Society. It would be a great time for folks to donate paint, brushes or their time to help our Tama County Humane Society.
