Each December students of the South Tama High School Autonomous Learner Class (ALM) sponsors and coordinate a fundraiser called Candy Canes for Cancer. Candy canes with personalized notes are sold at school and donations are collected from local businesses.
Money raised is used to purchase items locally that are requested on the Blank Children's Hospital published Child Life Wish List.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to work together and with local businesses to benefit a worthy cause. This year we raised over $700 in a two week period and we couldn't do that without the support of our local businesses. Students not only have the satisfaction of helping others, they are learning about social responsibility and what it takes to be leaders of the community."
