Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

MARSHALLTOWN- Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center (MMSC) Board of Trustees has announced that John Hughes has been promoted to Interim President and Chief Executive Officer, effective Jan. 31. Brian Burnside, FACHE, will be assuming the role of Strategy & Health Reform Advisor as part of the succession plan during a transition period.

"Day-to-day hospital and clinic operations focusing on our patients will always remain our top priority," said Dr. Terry Briggs, Chairman MMSC's Board of Trustees. John, as President and CEO, will have full authority to concentrate on efforts focused on enhancing patient care at MMSC. The healthcare industry is changing rapidly and MMSC is committed to implementing strategies to prepare for the future. Brian's expertise and advice in this area will help accelerate these efforts."

"The demands of today's healthcare industry require an intense focus on preparing our organization for the future, said Burnside. We also must simultaneously be making continuous improvements to our current operations," he stated. "The MMSC Board of Trustees recognizes the challenges and is proactively restructuring the organization to better prepare the hospital to take an active role in defining its place in the healthcare reform environment. This arrangement maximizes both John and my strengths and coordinates the work efficiently and effectively."

John Hughes, FACHE, has been with MMSC since May of 2012 as Chief Operating Officer.

"I am honored the Board has promoted me to the role of CEO. Our community hospital is in the middle of major changes in regards to healthcare reform, a building project, physician recruitment and many other demands. I appreciate the foundational work Brian has accomplished and look forward to working with the rest of MMSC's medical providers and staff to build on those efforts. We have a great team at MMSC and I know that they are up to the challenges we will face to meet the demands of our rapidly changing environment.
