On December 31, 2012, MADAC, held its annual New Year's Sobriety Powwow. Approximately 650 community members were in attendance, including the tribal chairman.

The night was filled with traditional Meskwaki powwow dancing, special contests, door prizes for all age groups, and there was a countdown to the New Year before midnight.

Supper and a midnight snack were provided, along with party favors. Concessions were provided throughout the evening.

MADAC did take this opportunity to continually promote our program services, provide literature and were available to any of the community members in attendance had immediate concerns.

Our partner, Great Plains Tribal Chairman's Health Board, provided information on tobacco cessation and its consequences. They also provided a short survey on tobacco use, where participants could receive a $20 gift card to Wal-Mart.

We had excellent feedback from the community members in attendance during and after the event. People indicated they were thankful for the event.

These were a few of the comments made throughout the evening: "It's an important event, as it is the only activity available on New Year's Eve", "I enjoyed the food", "I am grateful for the message of sobriety being expressed", and "It's great to see so many kids and youth at the powwow."

Staff members indicate that it was a huge success. It took the dedicated effort and months of planning and collaboration from the powwow committee.

MADAC continues to provide behavioral health services for the community and provides monthly activities. If you are in need of an alcohol/drug assessment, have questions about family members struggling with addiction, or need help for yourself, free to contact us at 484-9482.
