Members of the South Tama wrestling squad hoist their team championship trophy in Pella on Saturday. STC won the nine-team tournament.

"Winning this tournament was huge for us," coach Nate Van Dyke said. "This was the first time in a long while that we've been tournament champs. We had a lot of pins throughout the day, and everything kind of fell into place."

The Trojans had 10 wrestlers who finished in the top five of their weight classes at the nine-team tournament. Seven of those Trojans were in the top three and three were individual champions.

Senior Erik Lux continued his tremendous season by winning the 170-pound weight class. Lux remains undefeated on the season as he pursues a second state championship.

Also winning titles were freshmen Jaret Probasco (106 pounds) and Bailey Chyma (138 lbs.). It was the first individual high school championship for both wrestlers.

"Two freshmen taking first place was neat to see," Van Dyke said. "Bailey Chyma had to beat two undefeated seniors on his way to the championship."

Four South Tama wrestlers placed third in their weight classes Saturday. They were sophomore Kade Steuhm (126), senior Lucas Shope (132), senior Levi Kaufman (145) and sophomore Kyle Llewellyn (182).

Freshman Bryce Ellenbecker (113) and senior Bryce Climer (195) placed fifth at the tournament. Sophomore Levi Bogue (285) finished sixth.

On Dec. 13, the Trojans traveled to Vinton for a double dual night. They competed against Aplington-Parkersburg and Jesup. The Trojans defeated AP 46-33 and beat Jesup 51-30.

Shope, Chyma, Kaufman, junior Kolton Smith, Lux and junior Dalton Vest all went 2-0 on the night. Junior Jake Thiessen also won his only match for the Trojans.
