Roan: Retire Wieting debt in 2013

December 20, 2012
By Jim Roan - Project Manager , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

It's me again. As project manager for the Wieting Theatre and Opera House Foundation, I want to update the community on the operation of the Theatre and Opera House.

The renovation of the theatre is now complete and the building committee is more than satisfied with the new improvements.

The total cost of the renovation and new equipment came to $1,360,664. As of Dec. 12, 2012 we have raised the sum of $1,225,941. Over $400,000 of this amount raised is from individual donations.

This leaves a balance to raise of $134,723, and I would like to do this by the end of 2014. We are presently writing some grants to help pay off a part of this balance. We will still need some additional help from the community and I know you will do what you can for this worthy project. As you know, all donations to the Wieting Theatre Foundation are tax deductible as charitable donations.

Now, how has the Wieting Theatre Guild done since the theatre opened in Feb. of 2012. The Guild with over 100 community volunteers, as coordinated by Mark McFate, has been able to show a positive profit since the theatre opened in February of 2012. The Guild was able to pay $5,000 on the principal balance of our line of credit and hopes to help in the future.

The theatre and opera house have received great support from the South Tama County community and surrounding areas. The attendance has been very good for movies and live performances. The Guild has tried to have movies for all ages and they have had special showings for children and adults. The attendance for movies on a 3 day weekend has been from 150 to 450 people.

For live events the Guild has held Trivia Nights at the Reinig Center and thses have been good fundraisers. The STC High School has used the theatre for National Honor Society and other school events.

The live performances have also been very good and the opera house a great venue for the same. Some examples would be the program presented by Gary Zmolek with the Heather Mallory family and the movie about Templeton Rye.

The last two events at the opera house were "A Tale From the Bohemian Alps" and "Silent Night! Holy Night!" as presented by the Grace Community Singers of the Grace Community Church, Toledo, IA. The attendance at thses live events was from 300 to 500 people.

I will try to keep the community up to date on the operation of the theatre in 2013 and until the debt is paid in full and then we will have a party at the theatre and invite Ella Wieting.

You can send any donations to Jim Roan, Project Manager, Wieting Theatre, PO Box 387, Toledo, IA 52342. Call me at any time if you have any questions or would like a tour of the opera house.
