Clifford Ralph Downs

Clifford Ralph Downs, 91, of Montour, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2012 at Carrington Place of Toledo under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 7, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Montour. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 6, 2012 from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Clifford was born on November 25, 1921, in rural Montour, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Elsie (Dumbald) Downs.

He graduated from Montour High School.

Clifford served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On September 18, 1943, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Elizabeth Dillman at the Methodist Parsonage in Montour.

Clifford was a self-employed plumber and also did well work, and worked on wind mills. He was also employed at the Juvenile Home in Toledo for seventeen years, retiring in 1982. Clifford was a member of the American Legion. He was a former volunteer firefighter for the Montour Fire Department, where he was a former Chief. He was also a Scout Master with the Boy Scouts. Clifford liked hunting, fishing, and playing cards. He also enjoyed inventing things.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Eleanor in 2008; one daughter, Marsha Lynn Downs; two sisters, Ethel Hoskey, and Mabel Harrah; and one brother, Francis Downs.

Survivors include his children, Sonja (Lanny) Hoskey of Tama, David (Shirley) Downs of Toledo, Denise (Robert Stocklose) Downs of Rogers, AR, Tim (Pat) Downs of Tama, and Tom (Deb) Downs of Waterloo; nine grandchildren, Doug and David Wiese, Brian Downs, Mindy Downs Weidner, Cristi Downs, JoLyn Kay Meehan, Kali Downs, Justin and Jason Gochanour; thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to the Tama County Humane Society, Iowa River Hospice, or the Montour Community Center.
