Supports small business

Written in recognition of Support Small Buisness Day - Nov. 24

Letter to the Editor:

Every once in a while, I admit it, I enjoy treating myself to a few of the simply outstanding things in life; for me, it's an exceptional cinnamon roll (The Magnolia), Australian licorice (Wilkerson's Hardware) a French Vanilla Cappuccino (Casey's), and the biggest one of all a relaxing massage.

So, imagine my surprise when I see that Steph Kupka has just opened a new downtown Toledo business, Steph's Head to Toe Massage.

I scheduled a massage at Head to Toe last week and I must say that it was the highlight of my week. The massage was relaxing, therapeutic, professional and down-right amazing. It is exciting to see another small business owner opening shop in downtown Toledo.

It's great to see when an empty store gets filled with someone eager to provide a service to the community. I often hear that small towns do not have enough to offer. I feel contrary to these ideas as I see so much to offer in both Tama and Toledo. I feel extremely grateful for the business owners in both towns. Grateful for all that they do to make the cities thriving places.

Small businesses contribute positively to the community and provide our citizens with fantastic personal customer service. As the director of a business in town, I understand the importance and value of patronage. It sustains us and keeps the community blooming and alive.

We, as citizens must visit and purchase from our businesses to sustain them. As the holiday season approaches and you are thinking of your holiday gift-giving this year, remember the options in your own back yards. Have you visited any of them lately? Think to yourself, what can I purchase from one of my local businesses vs. a big name store? Perhaps you could make a goal. Your goal could be to purchase one gift locally or many of your gifts locally this year. You may be surprised at the variety you can come up with.

There are many ideas; a gift certificate for pizza, a unique wire gift, a cool South Tama t-shirt, a piece of artwork, a book of stamps, a few paperback books in a library bag, collectible coins, a salon certificate, a beautiful Willow Tree statue, a gift of Kolaches, theatre tickets or a gift of a relaxing & healing massage. I know my family and friends would enjoy any of these ideas.

So as a supporter of small business everywhere, I encourage everyone to take a stroll downtown, listen to the holiday music, stop and get a bite to eat and buy locally. Let's show our support and shop our neighboring small businesses this year. We depend on each other.
