Tama County Supervisors Larry Vest, Dan Wilkens and Kendall Jordan met Tuesday morning instead of Monday, due to the Veterans Day holiday being observed on Monday for county workers.
Also present was newly-elected 3rd District Supervisor Dan Anderson. Anderson will replace Wilkens on Jan. 1. Wilkens did not seek re-election.
A resolution was passed for establishing a speed limit on Highway E49 on Tama's west side.
RIGHT- Speed for east and westbound motorists will be reduced at Tama’s city limits on West 13th Street as the result of action by the Tama County?Board of Supervisors.
The speed limit will be 40 mph on Highway E49 beginning about 800 feet west of the city limits of the City of Tama and proceeding east to the city limits. Appropriate signs will be erected.
This speed limit is due to the speeding traffic in this area. Studying traffic in this area shows more than half the traffic as speeders.
The South Tama Recreation Trail intersects and crosses E49 here. It was the scene of a fatal car-pedestrian accident on Oct. 1 when a South Tama Middle School cross country runner Ian McFate was struck during practice while crossing the roadway.
The action is in accord with the Iowa Code in determining the speed limit on any secondary road where the speed limit is greater than is reasonable and proper under the conditions existing and may determine and declare a reasonable proper speed limit.
County Engineer Lyle Brehm told supervisors the Road Department is working in different areas trying to remove some dirt from high spots along the roads and distribute it to lower sections of road side with hopes to help restrict drifting of snow.
Brehm also reports the foundation for the Garwin County Building is completed. This building is being constructed due to the damage of the 2011 drecho wind storm and needed to be replaced.
