A handful of South Tama Middle School cross country runners competed in Grinnell just two days after one of their teammates passed away from injuries sustained during practice on Oct. 1.
South Tama eighth grader Ian McFate died Oct. 2 in the hospital after he was hit by a car during cross country practice the day before. The STC Middle School team found the courage to compete at Grinnell just two days later.
A trio of girls ran in the A-team girls race. Jensen Vodochodsky and Lauren Yuska led the way by placing 10th and 11th in the race. Their times were 13:46 and 13:48. Allison Yuska was also in the race and she finished 23rd, running 14:28.
Hunter Filloon and Jake Wilkerson competed in the A-team boys race. Fillooon finished 12th, running 12:25, while Wilkerson placed 23rd in a time of 14:49.
In the B-team boys race, Jacob Dostal, Thomas Lamb and Wyatt Hintermeister competed for STC. Dostal finished 15th, Lamb was 18th and Hintermeister placed 23rd for the Trojans.
Shae Slaven and Kaitlin Berger represented South Tama in the B-team girls race. They finished 11th and 12th for the Trojans.
