South Tama County United Fund sets $50,000 goal

The South Tama County United Fund Committee has set a goal to raise $50,000 in the South Tama Community to support 21 non-profit organizations. These 21 agencies are serving your community, your friends, your neighbors or perhaps have helped your family.

The United Fund is a great way to make a single contribution that will provide funding for many of the needs our community has. In this difficult economic time, more and more individuals and families turn to nonprofits to assist them through a variety of struggles. However many of those who provide help to others are also facing difficult funding cuts or lose of participation in their programs.

Here is a brief description of the agencies needing your support:

American Red Cross -Iowa River Chapter- Provide disaster relief, health and safety education, AIDS awareness, swimming, life guarding and basic first aid.

MS Service League - Provide counseling, education and advocacy services for people with multiple sclerosis and their families.

Boy Scouts of America, Mid-Iowa Council - provide programs in citizenship, leadership, and personal and moral fitness for area youth.

Central Iowa Residential Services, Inc. (CIRSI)- Provide residential services, adult daycare and employment for individuals with mental retardation and development disabilities in the STC area.

Compassionate Friends- Provide grief counseling and support to bereaved parents upon the death of their child.

Domestic Violence Alternatives (DVA) - Provide advocacy for battered women and sexual assault survivors and their families. They offer 24-hour intervention, counseling, shelter/safe home, education and criminal advocacy.

Girl Scouts, Conestoga Council - provides girls the opportunity to develop their potential by teaching skills of self-reliance, family values and community service.

Iowa River Hospice - Provide support services for medically diagnosed terminally ill patients and their families, during the illness and continuing through the bereavement.

Iowa Legal Aid - Provide justice in public and private affairs for low-income persons with an emphasis on legal problems concerning basic necessities and fundamental rights and safety.

Mental Health Clinic of Tama County - Provide mental health services to Tama County, including outpatient psychiatric services, therapy, SCL services and 24-hour emergency services.

Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) - Provide the capacity of all families to thrive. MICA's programs include Head Start, Early Head Start, family development, heating assistance, WIC, homeless programs, housing development and weatherization.

Mid-Iowa Workshops, Inc. - Provide vocational training and employment services for individuals with disabilities to help them achieve their desired goals.

STC Recreation - Provide recreational activities to youth ages 8-15. Activities include tennis, soccer, volleyball, golf, T-ball, softball, baseball, basketball and flag football.

Stork's Nest, Tama County - Provide an incentive program designed to educate and support pregnant women and new mothers with babies through age 15 Months.

Tama County Day Care, Inc. (Kid's Corner) - ) Provide childcare for ages 6 weeks-12 years and a preschool program. Tama County Daycare is the only license day care in south Tama County.

Tama County Career Development Center (CDC) - Provide day care services for adults with disabilities. The purpose of the program is to improve personal social skills, semi-independent living skills, communication and pre-vocational training.

Tama County Livestock & Fair Association - Operate the Tama County 4-H Fair, which provides a place and opportunity for youth to demonstrate new projects and experience responsibility, showmanship and sportsmanship. The participants receive recognition and advance to the State Fair level.

Tama County Council on Aging - Provide home delivered meals to the communities elderly and shut-ins and provide the elderly with transportation to doctor's offices and stores. Their goal is to keep elderly persons in their own homes longer.

Central Iowa Family Planning - They are a reproductive health care agency. They provide comprehensive family planning services, gynecology services, AIDS & STD education and treatment.
