Warriors’ first win comes on final play against Ankeny Christian

Meskwaki's football team earned its first win at home Sept. 28 on the final play of the game.

The Warriors scored a touchdown and two-point conversion to beat Ankeny Christian 64-62. It was the Warriors (1-5) first win of the season.

Ankeny Christian scored a touchdown with 11 seconds remaining in the game that seemed to seal the victory. The touchdown gave AC a 62-56 lead after the two-point try failed.

With just seconds on the clock, Meskwaki lateralled the ball twice during its kickoff return and took it deep into AC's territory. On the final play of the game, Terrell Grant threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Corey Dye, tying the game at 62-62. Grant ran the ball into the end zone on the two-point converstion, winning the game for the Warriors.

Meskwaki trailed big early in the contest. Ankeny Christian bolted out to a 14-0 lead, but Meskwaki answered with a 14-yard pass from Tyus Grant to Dye. However, AC rattled off 14 unanswered points, taking a 28-6 lead early in the second quarter.

The Warriors hung tough and chipped away at the lead. A pair of kickoff returns from Terrell Grant and Dye helped the Warriors' rally. Dye ran 71 yards in his return and Grant broke a 65-yard return for a score.

A 13-yard pass from Terrell Grant to Dye and a DeMarce Keahna two-point conversion run cut the lead to 10 after another AC score. Then Tyus Grant scored a touchdown on a 14-yard run and cut the AC lead to four points.

Ankeny Christian returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards for the touchdown and scored on the conversion, taking its lead back to 12 points. Then the Warriors scored twice and took their first lead of the contest in the third quarter.

Keahna scored both touchdowns for the Warriors. The first was a one-yard run and the second was a five-yard scoring run. Meskwaki led 48-44 late in the third quarter of the contest.

AC responded with two touchdowns of its own. The scoring plays were a 42-yard run and five-yard run. AC led 56-48 early in the fourth quarter. A 28-yard touchdown run from Terrell Grant and a conversion tied the contest with just 4:45 remaining.

Tyus Grant led the Warriors on the ground with 21 carries for 162 yards and one touchdown. Terrell Grant added 62 yards on 14 rushes. Keahna rushed the ball for 41 yards in his first game back from injury. Kade Brown added 15 yards for the Warriors.

Terrell and Tyus Grant also threw for a combined 115 yards on eight completions and three touchdowns. Dye caught three passes, all four touchdowns, for 49 yards. Tyus Grant also caught three passes for 43 yards. Allis Tahahwah and Brown each had 17 yards receiving in the game.

Defensively, Tyus Grant led the way with 11 tackles. Royce Timberwolf, Terrell Grant, Dye and Darrion Murray each added eight tackles for the Warriors. Tahahwah contributed seven tackles, while Wade Brown and Keahna had six apiece. Other Warriors with tackles were Rolex Cavazos (4), Kade Brown (4), Francisco Lasley-Santos (2) and Lawrence Blackcloud (2).

Meskwaki played Moravia last Friday, but results weren't available at press time.
