Tama City Council members voted 4-0 Monday night to set two periods to allow burning of leaves and some yard waste, one in October and one in November. The action came under the city's new ordinance governing open burning which went into effect on Sept. 14.
The allowable periods are:
Sunday, Oct 7 - Sunday, Oct 21

City Clerk Judy Welch said her office has had "phone calls galore" inquiring about the times.
Grass clippings and any material "with a wooded stem" is prohibited from being burned at any time.
The grass clippings can be deposited in a dumpster located north of the Tama Civic Center near the recycling collection area just off the West 5th - Harding streets intersection. Yard and garden waste can also be deposited here.
Treee limbs and brush must be taken to the city brush site located southwest of Cherry Lake. A gate key can be obtained during weekday hours at the office of the city clerk to access this site. The gate is open on weekends to allow access
The council vote 3-0 to put a ban on outdoor burning in Tama into effect on Sept. 14.
Recreational fires including fire pits and fire rings were not included in the ban and continue to be allowed.
