Update: Ian McFate, 13, Toledo died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 5, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, hospital spokesperson Greg Lagen said.
McFate, a student at the South Tama Middle School, was critically injured Monday in a car-pedestrian accident on Tama's west side according to Tama Police.
Police said McFate was transported to Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center by Tama ambulance, then airlifted to Mercy Hospital, Des Moines. McFate was an STC cross country athlete who was training on the South Tama Recreation Trail at the time of the accident at about 4:50 p.m., Oct. 1, police said.
The Trail crosses Tama County Road E49 (old Highway 30) along the west side of the Tama-Toledo Country Club. A westbound car operated by Timothy Nunnikhoven, 30, Montour, struck McFate. There were no injuries to the driver or his passengers, police said. Tama Fire department and ambulance service and Tama and Toledo paramedics were called to the scene according to the Tama Police department news release.
City of Tama Police were assisted by Toledo Police and the Tama County Sheriff's Office at the scene. The Iowa State Patrol is conducting the accident investigation.
A report received from police at 10:30 a.m. and reported on the tamatoledonews.com website was not correct. The Cedar Rapids Gazette website reported shortly after noon that report had been made in error by the Iowa State Patrol.
