South Tama's Middle School seventh grade football team played Independence last week an came away with a tie and a loss.
The opening game was a defensive battle as neither team could move the football against the opponent. In the second quarter, Colton Vest intercepted a pass for STC. The South Tama offense then completed an 18-yard pass, but it was called back because of a penalty. Costly penalties against Independence allowed South Tama to move the ball inside the 30 yard line. Independence then intercepted a pass and the half ended with the score 0-0.
Neither team was able to move the ball in the third quarter. Late in the fourth quarter, South Tama was able to hold Independence out of the end zone from inside the 10 yard line. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.
South Tama Middle School's seventh grade football team hosted Independence last week. The Trojans and Mustangs tied the first game and the Mustangs won the second contest.
Gabe Shields led the Trojans with 10 yards rushing on 13 attempts. Vest added three yards to the total. STC completed only two passes for 14 yards in the contest. Logun Freese had one for 10 yards, while Tanner Probasco had the other for four yards.
Defensively, Vest led STC with 12 tackles, but Probasco was close behind with 11 for the game. Mario Moncade added eight, while Freese an Lane Koch had six and five tackles, respectively. Gannon Ferneau and Preston Chyma also added four tackles apiece.
In the second game, Independence scored first on a five-yard run. The two point conversion was good. In the second quarter, Nick Ryan had a run of 46 yards but South Tama was unable to score. Independence scored another touchdown right before the half, taking a 16-0 lead into the break.
In the third quarter Independence scored on an eight-yard run. South Tama scored a fourth quarter touchdown on a 12-yard run by Rian Simpson. Koch threw a pass to Kadyn Doyle for the two point conversion. The final score of the game was 22-8.
Freese led STC with 47 yards rushing for the game. Ryan had 46 yards, too, while Simpson added 32 yards on the ground. Leading the way in tackles was Taylor Boldt, who had eight for the game. Also contributing on defense were Josh Thiesen (7), Christian Novak (6), Justus Ward (6), Cesar Zamarron (4), Doyle (4) and a handful of other Trojans.
