The South Tama County seventh grade football team traveled to Oskaloosa on Sept. 11 to open its season. The Trojans left with a 1-1 record against the Indians.
In the first game, South Tama scored first. The Trojans scored in the second quarter on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Colton Vest to Rian Simpson. The two-point conversion failed so STC led 6-0.
Oskaloosa answered back later in the quarter with a 54-yard punt return for a touchdown. The Indians' conversion was good and they led 8-6 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Oskaloosa scored on a three-yard run. The two point conversion failed and the Indians led 14-6. Neither team was able to move the ball much during the rest of the game. The final score went in Oskaloosa's favor, 14-6.
Vest led the Trojans' rushing game. He ran the ball 12 times for 32 yards. Also contributing to the ground attack were Gabe Shields (9 carries for12 yards), Logun Freese (7 carries for 14 yards), Tanner Probasco (5 carries for 10 yards), Rian Simpson (1 carry for 4 yards) and Nick Ryan (1 carry for 0 yards).
Defensively for South Tama, several players contributed a handful of tackles. They were Tanner Probasco 7, Gannon Ferneau 7, Mario Moncado 6, , Colton Vest 3, Rian Simpson 3, 3, Nick Ryan 2, Lane Koch 2, Gabe Backen 2, Logun Freese 1, Dalton Rosenburg 1, Preston Chyma 1 and Gabe Shields 1.
In the second game, Oskaloosa scored in the first quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion failed and the Indians led 6-0.
In the second quarter, South Tama came alive on offense scoring three touchdowns. Justus Ward caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Lane Koch. Logun Freese scored on a six-yard touchdown run. The two point conversion was good as Nick Ryan completed a pass to Justus Ward.
The final touchdown in the second quarter was on a 40-yard run by Rian Simpson. The two point conversion was good as Nick Ryan completed a pass to Pedro Rodriguez. The score at halftime was in favor of STC, 24-6.
In the third quarter South Tama scored on a 30-yard run by Preston Chyma. Neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter. South Tama won the game 30-6.
South Tama had three players with more than 50 yards rushing in the second game. They were Logun Freese (7 carries for 84 yards), Rian Simpson (6 carries for 68 yards) and Preston Chyma (6 carries for 54 yards). Also running the ball were Nick Ryan (4 carries for 30 yards), Taylor Boldt (3 carries for 7 yards) and Bryce Dickenson (1 carry for 2 yards).
Defensively, a dozen players recorded tackles. They were Kadyn Doyle 6, Nathan Lasley 4, Pedro Rodriguez 3, Josh Thiesen 3, Rian Simpson 3, Logun Freese 2, Dalton Rosenburg 2, Shaye Betz 2, Christian Novak 2, Justus Ward 1, Taylor Boldt 1 and Cesar Zamarron 1.
