Program Begins on Monday

September 14, 2012
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The Tama Toledo Lions Club will begin the 2012 Iowa KidSight Vision Screening Program on Sept. 17. Vision screening will be provided at four local locations which are set up by Area Education agency 267.

Location sites are the Tama Headstart on Monday, Sept. 17; South Tama County Elementary on Thursday, Sept. 27 and Friday, Sept. 28; Meskwaki Preschool, Tuesday, Oct. 16 th and Wednesday, Oct. 17; and Kids Comer Daycare on Monday, Jan. 28 and Tuesday Jan. 29, 2013.

Iowa KidSight is a joint project of the Lions Clubs of Iowa and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.

This program is offered to all children six months to 48 months old and the screening is free of charge.

Trained Lions Club Members take two pictures of each child's eyes with a camera that is specifically for this type of work. Completed pictures and supporting paperwork are then sent to the University Of Iowa Hospitals where they are checked for any potential problems.

If any are detected the information is sent directly to the child's parents and follow up can then be done by eye care specialists on a recommended list that is also enclosed in the information packet. Since the programs inception in the year 2000 approximately 205,800 Iowa kids have been screened and almost 9,000 have been referred for treatment.
