Cedar Rapids-The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMA) will reinstall seven of our first floor galleries with our new exhibition Marvin Cone: An American Master, opening on Saturday, September 29 with a with a special preview reception on Friday, September 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This reception is free and open to the public.

Like his good friend Grant Wood, Cedar Rapids native Marvin Cone was one of Iowa's most important artists. Cone's influence in Cedar Rapids is attested to by the multitude of students he taught in his 42 years at Coe College. More than that, Cone's work is reflective of several aspects of American art and his place in the greater discussion of American art is under-recognized. This large, seven gallery installation attempts to rectify that oversight, not only by reassessing Cones work in general, but also contextualizing it in the larger picture of American art. This is the first major solo exhibition of Cone's work since 1980.

Each gallery in Marvin Cone: An American Master focuses on a different subject matter of interest to Cone. There were themes to which Cone returned during his career, including the circus, clouds, barns, the rolling hills of Iowa, and stairs and doors to name a few. Each gallery, then, provides an opportunity to witness the development of a theme over time, to gaze in awe at majestic cloud formations, visit the circus, navigate city streets, or journey into the countryside, all with Marvin Cone as the guide. To create these galleries, the CRMA drew from its extensive collection of works of art by Marvin Cone (more than 500 pieces), as well as its Marvin Cone Archives.

The CRMA will also continue to hold its Art Bites programs on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:15 p.m. We're excited to announce that the programs on both Wednesday, November 7 and Wednesday, December 5 will focus on this new exhibition. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about some of the works in Marvin Cone: An American Master from the CRMA's Curator and Executive Director! Admission to the Art Bites program is free. Sponsored by Bankers Trust.
