A lot of reading took place this summer for the Toledo Library's Summer Reading Program. DREAM BIG! A whopping 15,982 minutes were read!

The meeting room was turned into an awesome night theme complete with a bat cave! The ceiling filled up with stars naming each of our reading participants. When participants turned in a reading log, they had their name put on a bat, then all the bats were suspended from the ceiling! It was fun to see the bats filling up the room! The summer reading program is a fantastic way for kids to keep up those reading skills during the summer months. All that's required is to sign up and read!

This summer reading event had four amazing programs. Week one consisted of the theme Night, Night , where these stories were read, How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers and Shine Moon Shine by David Conway were read to all. The crafts were Silvery moon and Starry Night. Subway certificates were handed out to all of our participants. Week two brought us Dreams and Wishes. Books read were, Willy the Dreamer by Anthony Browne, Yes Day by Amy Rosenthal and Mordant's Wish by Valerie Coursen. The super crafts of the day were creating a sandman from real sand and making dream jars. The Buttercow certificates were handed out to all of our readers on week two. Night Owls was the theme for the third week. Night Owl books consisted of Waddles by David McPhail, Hug Me by Patti Stren and I'm not Cute by Jonathan Allen. The crafts were all animals; raccoon, owl and porcupine paper plate crafts and the Blank Park Zoo treated us to a free zoo pass. The fourth week was Night Adventures where we read Camping Day by Patricia Lakin, Zigby Camps Out by Brian Patterson and Track that Scat by Lisa Morlock. The cool crafts were an ant chip clip, lightening bugs in a jar and constellation frames. Whew!! As a reward, there is always a final party. For the final party this year, the readers were treated to the movie Ice Age: Continental Drift in 3D at our lovely Wieting Theatre. Does this all sound like fun? Well it is! If so, make sure you get signed up next year. You will be glad you did.
