Mid-Iowa Community Action, Inc. (MICA) operates Head Start classrooms in Tama and the agency is currently enrolling students for classes this fall. Head Start provides the opportunity to grow and learn in a high-quality early childhood setting to preschool age children from low-income families. Head Start combines age-appropriate learning, social interaction, health screenings, nutrition education, parental involvement, and family development.
To qualify for Head Start, your child must be 3 or 4 years old before Sept. 15 and your household income must be within 130 percent of federal poverty guidelines. Children with special needs, foster children and homeless children may be eligible regardless of family income. Parents who wish to enroll their children in full-day classes must also work an average of 28 hours per week during the day, be full-time students, have a child under protective care, or be a Family Investment Program (FIP) recipient.
