Oak Hill Cemetery Association makes monument care available

August 3, 2012
By Anne Michael , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Some of the monuments at Oak Hill Cemetery are in the same condition as the one shown in the picture below on the left. Those monuments are covered with a living organism, whose growth if not checked, will eventually make the monument's inscription unreadable. The organism begins with a dark covering, which will grow in time.

In order to check the growth and protect the stone, itself, it is important to follow a careful procedure. First, one should never use bleach or an abrasive tool. Both are harmful to the stone. Instead, one should use a particular liquid designed to remove the material.

If you have concerns about stones in the cemetery, because the growth has started, you can purchase this cleaning agent from the Oak Hill Cemetery Association. The money generated from these sales will be used in the City of Tama's and the Association's continuing project of straightening stones.

The cleaning agent can be purchased by calling Judy or Nancy at the City Hall at 484-4345. Leave your name and number, and you will be contacted when your cleaning solution is ready. It will be in a spray bottle that will contain enough cleaner to cover a medium-sized stone. You will also be given a sheet of instructions on the correct cleaning method. The cost of the material is $6 per bottle.
