STC cross country teams to begin practice Monday

August 2, 2012
By Coach George Kuhter , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The South Tama cross country teams will begin practice on 7:30 a.m. on Monday. Interested team members should report to the track and field complex to begin the days activities.

Each member of the team should have a physical form, parent permission and proof of insurance, with a "heads up " waiver on file in the STC high school office. These forms were delivered to each student in the district earlier in the summer, but if there is a need for another form, stop by the high school office.

The cross country team is looking for interested, active and enthusiastic students to be part of the team. No experience in running is required. The 2012 team returns four of five all-conference team members from last year's third-place men's NICL team and fifth-place NICL women's team.

In addition, the programs overall philosophy is, "we have no bench", so anyone who is interested in getting in shape for their winter activities but who is not participating in football or volleyball is encouraged to give it a try. Everyone who shows up for practice, will get to run in every meet at some level.

The cross country team at STC has a relatively relaxed atmosphere that gives each participant the flexibility to be involved in other activities. Most of the 2011 squad was involved in band and/or cheerleading in the fall. Cross country is the ultimate cross-over sport. In order to letter as a varsity athlete, everyone must push themselves to do their best in every practice. Each student-athlete will participate in every meet and each participant runs against themselves as well as others on the team and other participants.

Men run five kilometers and women run four kilometers. Divisions in each meet are usually varsity (Top 7) and unlimited junior varsity entry races. Cross country is an individual sport where student run against the clock and themselves to perform to the best of their abilities. Meet team results are based on taking a runner's overall place and adding the total places together of the teams top five participants. Overall team place is determined with the lowest scoring team being the overall winner.
