August 7, 2012
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Meskwaki Settlement- Micah Young Bear, 9, of the Meskwaki Settlement, recently donated a copy of his book "Discoveries: New Writing from The Iowa Review" to the Toledo Public Library. Brenda Wanatee accepted the book on the library's behalf.

Micah,, who's the son of Stella and Ray Young Bear, attends the tribal school where he's known as Ke da tti - Ma ga. Like his brothers and sisters, he's also a frequent visitor to the library.

There's a family connection with Discoveries, a publication from the University of Iowa. Among the 40 literary selections in the special high school reader are two songs called "Micah Rider's Song" and "The One I Live With." These were originally composed in Meskwaki and then translated into English by Ray for Micah and his mother.

An excerpt from the Editor's introduction for Discoveries:

"Discerned, ascertained, unearthed, coerced, conceived, stumbled upon--discoveries can take many forms, announcing themselves, sneaking up from behind, hooking you by the ear, or whispering into it. When we read and study them, we see other minds in key moments of thought, other ways of perceiving the world, and this in turn urges us toward a greater understanding of our own assumptions, often unexamined, about living..."
