The South Tama volleyball team attended the University of Northern Iowa Team Camp on July 13-14. Fourteen of the lady Trojans participated from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
We split into two teams of seven. Our first day started with offensive college level drills and agility work. In the afternoon, the lady Trojans would scrimmage within their division. The lady Trojans played teams from Basehor-Linwood, Waterloo Columbus, Riverdale, Springville and United.
Within their divisions, Team No. 1 beat Basehor-Linwood, Springville, United and Waterloo Columbus. Team No. 1's only loss was to Riverdale. Team No. 2 beat everyone in its division, which included Basehor-Linwood, Springville and United.
The South Tama County High School volleyball team had a successful weekend earlier this month. On July 13 and July 14, the Trojans won the University of Northern Iowa Team Camp and the Iowa State Games on the following day. Pictured here, front row (l-r) are Riley Craun, Shelby Bradley, Tori Appelgate and Emily Martin. Back row (l-r) are Coach Michelle Bradley, Madison Baack, Samantha Holtz, Jade Rohach, Taylor Muhlstein, Trisha Walz and Alana Vest.
Our second day consisted of defensive college level drills and agility work. This day was seeding and bracket play. Team No. 1 received a No. 2 seed and team No. 2 received a No. 1 seed within their divisions.
Team No. 1 had to play the No. 1 seed, which was Riverdale, who handed team No. 1 its only loss during pool play. The lady Trojans redeemed themselves, but it took three sets. They lost the first set 26-24, won the second 25-20 and won the third 15-10. This deemed them team camp champions. Team No. 2 had to play the No. 2 seed team. The lady Trojans held strong with an undefeated camp experience naming them the champions of their division as well.
The girls' weekend wasn't done. We also competed in the Iowa Games on July 15. Starting at 8:30 a.m. and continuing throughout the morning, the lady Trojans had to play everyone in their pool. The Pool A Teams were South Tama, Albia Aces, Ventura Tomahawks, Eagles Afton and Waukon Heat. The Pool B Teams were Lincoln Rails Des Moines, Sioux City Dynamite, Iowa Heart 15-1 Gilbert, IKM-Manning Wolves, and 12 Strong Sanborn.
The lady Trojans played three matches back-to-back-to-back. The first match was against the tough Ventura Tomahawks, but the lady Trojans won 21-19 and 21-18. The second match was versus Waukon Heat and the Trojans won 21-13 and 21-10. The third match was a nail biter of a match against the Eagles Afton. This match went three sets, where STC lost 21-17, won 21-11 won 21-19.
The lady Trojans finally got a rest, but had to referee the next match. Thank you parents for volunteering to line judge so our girls could get a much needed rest. The final pool play match was against Albia Aces, where the Trojans won 21-14 and 21-12. The Trojans earned a No. 1 seed for afternoon bracket play.
The first match in bracket play was against Iowa Heart and STC won 25-17 and 25-14. This put the lady Trojans into the semifinals against Ventura. This was the match of the day. Long rallies, hard hits, big digs and tough serves from both teams made this a very exciting match. Bracket play is best two out of three sets. Yes, we went all 3 sets. What a match! The Trojans won the first set 26-24, lost the second 26-24 and won the third 15-10 to make it to the finals.
The final match of the evening started at 7 p.m. against Eagles Afton. Trojans won in two sets, 25-14 and 25-20. Hooray! Champions! What a weekend for the lady Trojans. They were the UNI Team Camp Champs and Iowa Games Champs.
