From God’s Perspective – Do you know the 10 Commandments?

July 13, 2012
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Letter to the Editor:

From God's Perspective Do you know the 10 Commandments? Why is it important? Because it is the revelation of God's will to you; the things that you should and should not do. The 10 Commandments are summarized by the 2 greatest commandments; You shall love God with all of your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself. There is only one true and living God. The 1st commandment of the ten is "You shall have no other gods before me"; nothing or no one more important to you, no one whom you shall give a higher allegiance to than the God revealed in the Bible. The 2nd is that "You shall not make for yourself a carved image?any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them." "For I am a jealous God visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments." In this commandment we see that God has determined that we should not worship Him with things made by our own hands. He is not to be worshiped through statues, images, or paintings of our own artistic conceptions of what He is like. He is not worshiped aright when He is worshiped by our own conception of Him apart from His declaration of the kind of worship that He is looking for. He is Spirit, and those who worship God must worship Him in spirit and in truth. Worship is described in this commandment as "bowing down" and "serving Him". He does not want you bowing down in worship to things that are not Him. Why? Because He is a jealous God. He wants all of the worship of your heart and mind. Your worshiping other gods, He says here, will affect the earthly and eternal well-being of your children and your grandchildren, perhaps of many generations of your descendants. Therefore you should repent (turn away from, and renounce) all false worship and come to Him for help to know Him. This saving help is found in believing in Jesus Christ for your salvation and then seeking to unite with a church of God's people, so you might worship Him according to the truth of the Bible. Only the Lord Jesus Christ has kept God's commandments perfectly. That is why you must believe in Him. What pleases God is when you come and bring your offerings of praise, and you will sit and listen to His word, and then by faith in Christ you learn to give to Him the glory due His name. Do you worship God rightly? Do you sing psalms and hymns to Him? Do you praise Him and give Him offerings? Do you receive His word to do it? Think about it.
