By John Speer - Editor , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Willie Laverne Haughey, 46, Tama, was identified as the victim of an apparent near drowning near Tama on Sunday, June 24 by the Tama County Sheriff's Office.

Haughey was reported to have gone under water in the Iowa River about one mile east of Tama and was rescued by others who were believed accompanying him, some of who were floating in inner tubes -tubing- according to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said Monday two unidentified persons from Grinnell administered CPU to Haughey after he was pulled from the water onto a sandbar.

Other reports said a relative administered CPU.

Initial police radio traffic said the victim was not breathing when reported at 2:42 p.m.

The Tama Fire Department and Ambulance Service and Tama County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene.

Haughey was transported by ambulance to Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. An update on his condition is being sought.

The Sheriff's Office report did not note the depth of water in the river where the incident occurred.
