June 26, 2012
By Chronicle/News Herald Staff , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The 21st Annual Harry Gardner/ Toledo 5K run and walk will take place this year at 7 p.m. July 3. Walk-up registrations will be taken at the courthouse until 6:45 on race day. Cost for the run this year will be $17 until July 3rd and $20 on race day. T-shirts are guaranteed on race day for all participants who have registered by July 3, 2011. If anyone has any questions or would like to register before July 3, please contact George Kuhter(484-4938).

This year's course will remain the same as last year through the streets of Toledo. The competitive race will include 11 age divisions for both male and female competitors. Medals will be awarded to the top three competitors in each age group division. In 2012, the race included over 65 runners and 23 walkers. 2010 winners were Luke Demmel of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Kelsey Kupka of Toledo, Iowa. Each is expected back this year to defend their title in what is expected to be a very competitive 2012 race.

As in the past, there will be a non competitive walk for all ages over the 3.1 mile course. Cost for walkers is the same to enter as runners and also includes a t-shirt.

This year there will again be competition in the family division races. These races will award the top combined times in four categories Mother/Daughter, Father/Daughter, Father/Son and Mother/Son competitors in the race. The top two teams in each divisions will receive a special medal for their efforts. You are asked to please indicate on the entry form whether you will be participating in the Family Challenge.

Also this year, we are having a special offer for participants in one family and area middle and high school cross country runners. Each person that registers from a single family with more than four participants will receive a discount of $2 per person if registered by July 3rd. Tama County high school aged students who have not graduated and participated in cross country last fall or intend to participate this fall will also receive the $2 per person discount if they register at least four team members.

The Harry Gardner/Toledo 5K is used in part as a fund raiser for the South Tama County Middle and High School Cross Country teams. This past season, funds generated from the run have helped purchase incentive t-shirts for team members and essential training aids for the team.
