June 18, 2012
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Tama County's Women, Land, and Legacy will hold its 17th event, To Market, To Market Tour, on Tuesday, June 26.

Registration and dessert will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the USDA Service Center in Toledo at 102 Business Hwy 30 West, across from The Butter Cow. The tour will leave from the service center promptly at 7 p.m. with participants carpooling for the tour.

Two stops are on the tour schedule. Jamie Busch-Upah will host the group at John Ernest Vineyard and Winery off of U.S. 30 east of Tama, and Esther Keller will lead the tour of Kellerberry Farm on U.S. 63 north of Toledo.

An RSVP is encouraged. Please call Melody Bro at 641-484-2702, extension 120 by Friday, June 22. This meeting is free and open to the public. Both men and women with an interest in land and/or agriculture are welcome to attend.

Several local agencies are working to bring Women, Land and Legacy to Tama County-- Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Service Agency, Tama County Extension Service, Iowa Valley Resource Conservation & Development, and the Tama Soil & Water Conservation District. Special thanks to the ladies who serve on the Women, Land, and Legacy Core Committee: Rebecca Hosek, Julia Babinat, Margaret Babinat, Glenda Devick, Pat Oettchen, Georgette Edel, Frances Bacon, Karla Novotny and Jan Wobeter.

In recent years, women's roles in Iowa agriculture have changed dramatically. It has become more and more evident there is a need to reach out to women at the local level and to help them make connections they may find helpful as landowners, farmers, and other important role-players in our state's largest industry.

In response to this increasing need, the USDA State Outreach Council has designed the program Women, Land and Legacy: Building Your Farm's Future Today. Through small group dialogue and focused conversation, women listen to each other and bring ideas together to coordinate connections with each other, with information, with local and statewide resources, and with others in their communities. This grassroots program is currently active in numerous Iowa counties.
