Despite a large, early-game deficit, the South Tama varsity softball team nearly came back to beat Grundy Center Tuesday at home.

However, the Trojans' rally came up just short. The pulled within one run with two innings remaining, but struggled to bring runners home in the sixth and seventh innings. The Trojans (0-3) fell 15-12 to the Spartans.

"We gave up quite a few walks tonight," head coach Chelsea Ahrens said. "This was only the second varsity start ever for Sam (Holtz). We were missing Jenn (Maus) tonight because of state golf. We had trouble throwing strikes. It's tough to walk that many batters. However, I thought we did a good job of taking walks on offense. We battled and hit the ball when we needed to. We did have a few errors. The comeback wasn't quite enough, but I'm proud of how we battled."

South Tama sophomore Hailee Weiss slides into home plate, beating the catcher's tag. Weiss' run helped the Trojans battle back into the game. STC lost the game, 15-12, to Grundy Center.

Grundy Center took a large early lead by scoring five runs in the first inning. The Spartans added two in the second and four more in the third inning, taking an 11-2 lead after two-and-a-half innings. STC responded with five runs in the third inning and three in the fourth, closing the gap to one run.

However, Grundy Center added two runs in the next two innings and the Trojans left runners stranded during that time. STC did score two more in the sixth inning.

"We have come a long ways since last week." Ahrens said. "We lost 20-5 and if you look at that score and it sounds terrible. It was 8-5 through four innings, but they scored 12 runs in the fifth inning. I think we've come a long ways, as far as our attitudes, our approach at the plate and our defense."

South Tama plays at East Marshall tonight. The JV play at 6 p.m. with varsity to follow at 8 p.m.
