The South Tama girls tennis team earned a berth in the Regional Final after two stirring wins on Saturday in the Team Tennis Regionals.
The Trojans dropped Western Dubuque in the first round by a score of 5-3. In the second round, STC asserted itself in a dominating performance over Webster City 5-0. South Tama will play Dubuque Wahlert at 9 a.m. on Saturday with a chance to qualify for the State Team Tournament.
Against Western Dubuque, South Tama swept the first four singles matches to build a commanding lead. Sophomore Emily Martin dismpatched Western Dubuque's Tracy Wulfekuhle at No. 2 singles by a 6-1, 6-2 score. Senior Sarah Holtz came up big at No. 4 singles as she downed Western Dubuque's Nicki Neal 7-5, 6-3.
Senior Kendra Bradley was pushed to the limit by Western Dubuque's Hannah Hingtgen at No. 1 singles before dominating a super-tiebreaker to seize the match 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (2). Sophomore Madison Baack also played Western Dubuque's Sidney Burds to a super-tiebreaker at No. 3 singles. Baack proved too tough as she won 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (8).
Western Dubuque kept their chances alive when Stacy Kass won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles over STC's Alexandrah Walker. McKayla Seymour also posted a win at No. 6 singles when she defeated South Tama's Tori Appelgate 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles play, Holtz/Walker teamed to face White/Kass at No. 3 doubles. The team from Western Dubuque tallied a 6-3, 6-2 victory. South Tama's Martin/Baack matched up against Neal/Burds at No. 2 doubles. They converted a 6-1, 7-6 (1) win to push the Trojans to a first-round victory.
In the second round, STC faced Webster City. The Trojans made quick work of the Lynx as they dominated singles play. Kendra Bradley blanked Kasey Adams 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Emily Martin matched that score as she downed Cambria Hoffman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. STC picked up another win at No. 3 singles by Madison Baack, who defeated Ariel Clabaugh 6-0, 6-2. Sarah Holtz crushed Kelsey Bahrenfuss at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-1. The Trojans clinched the match after Alexandrah Walker outplayed Abby Groves 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Tori Appelgate scored a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lynne Chalfant after the match outcome had been determined.
STC stands at 9-2 on the 2012 Season.
