The South Tama Middle School eighth grade boys track team had a huge victory on the track last week. The Trojans took the team championship at the Vinton-Shellsburg Relays on May 1 .
The Trojans beat perennial power-house, West Delaware, by two points for the team title. STC collected 106 points to West Delaware's 104.
"We showed that we can come out and compete with anyone," STC eighth grader Blake Keller said. "It was a great team victory and something that we plan on building off of going into the conference meet next week."
The Trojans had strong a first-place finish from the 3,200 meter relay team of Dakota Vodochodsky, Colson Frakes, Blake Keller and Jaret Probasco, which won its race in a time of 10:03. Lane Votrobeck placed first in the discus with a toss of 133 feet and 5 inches.
Second-place finishes came from Justin Suchanek in the long jump (16-11), 10 flight hurdles (16.03) and the 200 meter hurdles (28.34). Keller also finished in second place in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:24.
The Trojans finished the week in Conrad, competing at the BCLUW Cobra Relays. The Trojans collected their fifth team championship on the season with 183 team points. First-place finishers and personal records were accomplished by Votrobeck in the discus with a toss of 140-9, Ruben Garcia in the long jump with a leap of 17-9, Vodochodsky with a time of 2:26 in the open 800-meter run, and the 4x100 team of Bailey Chyma, Brandon Miller, Gavin Haughey and Diego Murillo circling the track in 53.60 seconds.
Additional first-place finishes came from the Trojan 4x800 team of Keller, Probasco, Mitch Thede and Bryce Ellenbecker with a time of 10:51; Justin Suchanek in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.8 seconds; Keller in the 1,600 run with a time of 5:25; and the 4x200 team consisting of Chyma, Miller, Haughey, and Leake running a 1:53.
The Junior High Trojans finish the season with the NICL conference track meet on Friday in Conrad.
