Play as a team, win as a team. The South Tama girls tennis team smashed their fifth North Iowa Cedar League opponent on Thursday, when it defeated South Hardin by a score of 6-3 on a hot, humid night of tennis.
The Trojans nabbed four singles victories at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 by Kendra Bradley, Emily Martin, Madison Baack and Alexandrah Walker to put themselves in position to win. Due to illness, several players saw themselves playing out of position on the night. It didn't phase the Trojans as they moved their season record to 7-1.
Bradley pushed her season singles record to 10-1 after she defeated Ellen Swartz of South Hardin 10-5. Martin remained perfect on the season at 8-0 after a win over South Hardin's Alesha Kadolph by a 10-6 score. Baack turned back the Tigers' Victoria Edgerton 10-4 to see her season record move to 6-2.
South Hardin picked up a pair of wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles when Mikayla Fisher defeated South Tama's Sierra Old Bear 10-4 and Brooke Rush won against the Trojans' Tori Appelgate 10-3. Walker, an STC senior, outplayed South Hardin's Katie Branch to grab a win at No. 6 singles by a score of 10-2.
In doubles play, the visiting Trojans wrestled two out of three matches to claim the meet. STC's Bradley and Appelgate teamed up for the first time this season as they faced Swartz/Kadolph at No. 1 doubles. In a very well played match the duo from South Tama clicked as they converted a 10-8 victory for the Trojans. At No. 2 doubles, Martin/Baack improved to 8-1 on the season when they downed South Hardin's Edgerton/Rush 10-5. The Tigers' lone win at doubles came at No. 3. Fisher/Branch defeated South Tama's Old Bear/Walker 10-7.
The South Tama County girls junior varsity team crushed the South Hardin JV 9-1. South Tama got wins in doubles play from Aubree McFate/Blair Bridges, Taylor Muhlstein/Regina Balderas, Caitlin Svacina/Leah Mann, Ali Vavra/Mollie Morgan, Hannah Brezina/Jennifer Perez, Sydney Meek/Federica Pozzi, Danialle Taylor/Mackenzie McFate, Rachael McAdoo/Emily Jantzen, and Emily Brezina/Molly Prusha. The STC Girls JV tennis team is now 6-1 on the season.
The Trojans next face Aplington-Parkersburg at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday at the STC Tennis Complex. South Tama will recognize seven seniors this night on Senior Night.
