South Tama Middle School's girls track and field program claimed its first victory of the season last week at Hudson.
The Trojans beat six other teams at a meet where seventh and eighth grade girls competed together. Nashua Plainfield finished runner-up, while Hoover and Denver placed third and fourth.
South Tama's girls team also combined to win four events and place second in four more. The lone individual gold medalist was Raena Lasley, who won the 1,500-meter run. Tavian Lasley finished second in the race.
The Trojans won three relays at the meet. Those relays were the 3,200-meter relay (Jensen Vodochodsky, Tavian Lasley, Raena Lasley and Heavan Berinobis), 800-meter relay (Jordyn Thompson, Kallie Hala, Courtney Anderson and Belle Tyynismaa) and the shuttle hurdle relay (Jordan Knowles, Allison Yuska, Dani Stubb and Lauren Yuska).
Finishing second in their events was Knowles in the 100-meter hurdles and the distance medley team of Thompson, Allison Yuska, Berinobis and Vodochodsky. STC's Anderson also placed third in the 200-meter dash.
Stubb (400-meter dash) and Tyynismaa (100-meter dash) were the pair of fourth-place finishes for the Trojans. Allison Yuska placed fifth in the 200-meter hurdles. The Trojans' 400-meter relay team of Ashley Thomazin, Lexi Dreesman, Marilyn Anaya and Hala finished fifth in its race.
The other placers for South Tama were Carina Chavariia in the 400 dash, Brooke Keller in the 100 hurdles and the sprint medley team of Kelsey Quigley, Sabrina Holtz, Ellie Cervantes and McKenna Knock.
On April 23, the South Tama girls traveled to Pella to compete against Pella, Newton, Oskaloosa, Grinnell, Chariton, Centerville and Knoxville. STC came away with two wins in individual events.
Belle Tyynismaa took first in the 400-meter dash with a personal best of 67.47 seconds and Madie Bacon jumped 4 feet, 8 inches, which was also a personal best to claim first in the high jump.
Other top placers included the third-place 3,200-meter relay (Natalie Stadler, Kallie Hala, Socorro Mendoza and Tavian Lasley), which ran 12:27; fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay (Jordan Knowles, Brooke Keller, Dani Stubbs and Kallie Hala); sixth place to Belle Tyynismaa in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.25 and fifth in the 200-meter dash (29.68); and second and fourth to Tieranny Keahna in the shot put and discus (26-2 and 69-3).
