South Tama School Board approves NYC music trip

The South Tama School Board viewed the agenda for the South Tama Band and Choir students trip to New York City at their regular meeting on Monday, April 16 and voted 5-0 to approve the travel.

Mike Carnahan, high school band director, requested permission for the band and choir students to go to New York City in June of 2013.

The students and Music Boosters Club have raised the money to cover the trip. The trip is scheduled from June 9 through June 15.

Board members approved a form of Tax Exemption Certificate which was necessary to complete the process of refinancing.

Also approval was given for a continuing disclosure certificate and a resolution to authorize the issuance of bonds.

These steps are all necessary for refinancing the balance of the loan for the elementary school building.

Terri Guenther Mayer was present with a proposal for the farm ground for this year.

She gave a report from last year on the 12 acres with a profit of $4,558. It was decided Guenther and her students would farm the 50 plus acres this year, feeling it was an excelllent experience for the FFA students, as well as profitable.

The superintendent recommended the adoption of the ISCAP Supplemental Resolution allowing the district to be eligible for short term cash advances during the next fiscal year from the Iowa School Cash Anticipation Program.

ISC requires the school to have a Financial Solvency Plan to address the negative fund balance.

The actions necessary for this plan have been advertised by the action to increase the levy and reduce the budget. This includes implementing an Instructional Support Levy for the first time for Fiscal Year 2013 Budget, approved expenditure reductions of approximately $390,000, and forecasting a positive fund balance by the end of Fiscal Year 2013.

The school will maintain expenditure reductions made during FY13 Budget year, and a decision regarding the cash reserve levy and Instructional Support Levy amounts will be made in the spring of 2013.

In other business it was decided to offer a summer food service program again this summer, extending it to 34 days (June 4 - July 20). The application must be submitted in order to provide the program and receive reimbursement from the Bureau of Nutrition for the meals served.

Previously the Board of Education selected a Director District Plan This was due to redistricting.

The board has approved the new plan, selected from the three plans offered.
