Eighth grade boys finish second at home meet

The South Tama Middle School boys track teams competed at their home invitational on evening of April 17.

The eighth grade boys team finished second in the team standings on their home track. Pella took the team title by scoring 141 points. The Trojans totaled 106 team points on the night.

Lane Votrobeck was an individual champion in the discus with a toss of 132 feet and 6 inches. The Trojans had multiple strong second-place finishes from Justin Suchanek in the 200-meter hurdles with a time of 29.65 and in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet and 5 inches; and from Ruben Garcia in the open 400-meter dash, circling the track in 1:02. The Trojan 3,200-meter relay team, consisting of Dakota Vodochodsky, Colson Frakes, Blake Keller and Jaret Probasco, took second with an overall time of 10:13.

Andrew Peters gave the Trojans a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet. STC also collected third-place finishes from Garcia jumping 17-1in the long jump, Justin Suchanek in the 100-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles. Relay teams that finished third were the distance medley team of Gaven Haughey, Carter Moore, Mitch Thede and Vodochodsky; and the 800-meter relay team of Bailey Chyma, Kyaus Davenport, Moore and Haughey.

Fourth-place finishers were Frakes in the mile, Garcia in the 200-meter dash and the sprint medley team of Chyma, Davenport, Moore and Thede. STC's fifth-place finishers were Votrobeck in the shot put, shuttle hurdle relay team of Diego Murillo, Jaret Probasco, Jake Witt and Victor Chavez; 400-meter relay team of Chyma, Davenport, Haughey and Vodochodsky; and the 1,600-meter relay team of Thede, Chavez, Murillo and Probasco. Placing sixth were Vodochodsky in the 800-meter run and Craun in the high jump.

Non-place winners in the tough field were Garcia in the 100-meter dash, Marcos Nunez in the 400-meter dash and 200-meter hurdles, Murillo in 100-meter hurdles, Keller in the 800-meter run, Harley Matta in the shot put and Shaquille Carillo and Peters in the discus.

The Trojans will return home on Friday to compete on their home oval as a member of the GMG Invitational.
