The South Tama County middle school eighth grade girls hosted their home invitational on Monday. Competing in the meet were Benton Community, East Marshall, Grinnell, Pella, South Tama and Vinton-Shellsburg.
The Trojans scored well in the field events building up 40 points. Madie Bacon won the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 7 inches and Tieranny Keahna won the discus, throwing it 71-7.
Other top field event performances included Belle Tyynismaa finishing second in long jump (14-11), Tieranny Keahna finishing runner-up in shot put (27 feet) and Katie Chyma placing fourth in discus (63-5).
Running event performances included third place in the sprint medley (Marilyn Anaya, Katie Chyma, Jordan Knowles and Belle Tyynismaa) as they ran 2:12.8; Tavian Lasley placing third in the 800-meter run (2:53) and fourth in the 1500-meter run (6:09); and Dani Stubb finishing fourth in the 200-meter hurdles (36.26). The girls showed much improvement, cutting their times from the first meet and finished fifth as a team.
On April 12, the STC MS girls traveled to Van Horne for the first meet of the season to face Anamosa, Benton, Center Point Urbana, Union and Vinton-Shellsburg.
The girls were in second place at the conclusion of the field events with Tieranny Keahna winning the shot put with a throw of 28-3. Other placers included Madie Bacon placing second in the high jump (4-6), Tieranny Keahna and Ryan Roberts were fourth and fifth in the discuss throwing 73-2 and 70-2 and Belle Tyynismaa leaping 13-4 to place fifth in the long jump.
Running events results included second- and third-place finishes by Katie Chyma (14.96) and Belle Tyynismaa (15.04) in the 100-meter dash. The shuttle hurdle relay of Jordan Knowles, Booke Keller, Dani Stubbs and Kallie Hala placed third with a time of 1:24.8 and the sprint medley of Marilyn Anaya, Maria Fonseca, Tavian Lasley and Belle Tyynismaa placed third with a time of 2:14.5. Tavian Lasley placed third in the 1,500-meter run in a close race at the finish line with a time of 6:08.
