South Tama School board members are scheduled to approve the 2012-13 district budget at a special meeting tonight- Monday, April. 2. The meeting is set for 5 p.m. and the location was changed to the elementary cafeteria from the Administrative Center.

It was unknown at Chronicle press deadline what form the budget would take. It sparked some concern and comment after it was announced the initial $20.4 million budget proposal would result in a 28 percent property tax hike.

The board tabled action on the budget following a public hearing on March 19.

A number of potential budget cutting measures were considered by the school board during a special meeting on Monday, March 26.

They include:

eliminate the Curriculum director position.

eliminate one high school English teacher position

combine the middle school and high school band director position

eliminate one elementary teacher

eliminate one custodial position

hold off one year on the text book plan.

eliminate one secretary position making the position a half-time position

discontinue the inter-school mail route

eliminate the family consumer science position at the Middle School

These recommendations will be considered only if the board decides to reduce the levy

Redistricting

The South Tama County School Board met in special session on Thursday night, March 29, to discuss the redistricting plan for board members.

Present were board members Michelle Yuska, 1st District, Mark McFate, 2nd District, Ron Hala, 4th District and Jackie Dvorak, 5th District. Third District Board Member Anne Michael was absent.

Due to the release of the 2010 Federal Census data, school districts are required by law to redistrict their boundaries.

Iowa School Planners Information Services (ISPIS), has prepared three options for the board to select from.

District 4 and District 5 have the most significant change as the population in those areas has shifted and the board selected Option three which provided for these shifts.

District 4 includes and area from Toledo west and north.

District 5 is an area basically including the area from Tama eastward through Chelsea and south of U.S. Highway 30.

Watch for maps of the new district boundaries when they become available.
