Rielly won’t seek third Iowa Senate term

State Senator Tom Rielly (D-Oskaloosa) announced Tuesday he will not seek a third term in the Iowa Senate. Rielly has represented the southern tier of townships including the City of?Chelsea in the senate for the past eight years.

Rielly's district also included areas of Poweshiek, Mahaska, Iowa and Keokuk counties.

In a press release, Rielly said, in part, "After many months of consideration and thought, I am announcing today that I will not seek re-election to a third term to the Iowa State Senate. Please believe me, my wife, Mary and I are not I am not making this decision on a whim and it was not an easy one to make.

Rielly's territory in Tama County is included in the new Senate District 36 which includes the entire county, much of Marshall and a small section of southeastern Black Hawk counties.

Sen. Steve Sodders is a candidate for the nomination on the Democratic ticket.

Jane Jech and Larry McKibben are vying for the Republican nomination.
