A week ago or so, the Academy Awards were on television. Big deal, huh? The evening that the Oscars are handed out in the movie industry. With over a "zillion" award shows, the Oscar is probably Numero Uno. But in all honesty, it's just another "dog & pony" show. It's maddening to say the least that we idolize these people like gods and goddesses. And it's a shame too. But so many, (not you or me), go (lady) gaga over the mega-movie stars. I mean, do we really care who some movie star endorses for President?
However, I'm not all that excited about what movie they picked for best picture. And I bet you're not either. But, as long as I'm betting, I bet you've been wondering what are "John's Oscars?" My best movies of all time? Once this train of thought was birthed....I found out Deb had her best movies also, and they weren't close to mine. Also found out from others in the family what they liked the best.
So, what are the best, best movies of all time? Sounds relatively easy. If you don't have to narrow the list down, it is easy. Everyone just shouts out a movie they enjoyed. But, but, but....how about paring down the list to "The Top Ten Favorite Movies Of All Time?" Yea, only ten! Now if you're only about 11 or 12 years old, that's probably not too hard but if you've reached the mature age Deb and I are at, well, it's a tad harder. If not impossible. And a strain on a good relationship. Be careful!!!
The list can become so exhaustive. There are a lot of good movies we've all seen over the years. In about two or three evenings, Deb & I had come up with about forty movies that we have enjoyed over the years. Some we both enjoyed and some just one of us enjoyed greatly. For example, Deb loves disaster-type movies and good vs bad guy movies. Give her a tornado, hurricane or flood kind of movie or a Rambo or Die Hard kind of show and she loves it. She loves how the hero is saved in the nick of time.
Me? Hah. Give me Anthony Hopkins in "Silence of the Lambs" or the shower scene in "Psycho." I love those movies where even now at my age, I sleep with my eyes open. I also love sports movies, gangster movies and even sometimes those crazy, zany movies. One of our favorite holiday movies, (only because everyone's home for the holidays), is "The Jerk" with Steve Martin. What a crazy movie. And it generates so many belly laughs. Oh, I also love Westerns. John Wayne, Robert Mitchum & Jimmy Stewart are my favorites.
So, now, we need to narrow the list down. Instead of the best movies of all time, we need to pick a certain genre of movies. These genres include Musicals, Science Fiction, Real Life, Comedy, Psychological thrillers, Sports, Disaster, Scary/Monster and even Christian. I'm sure there are others but this is a good start.
Now, you have some homework this week to do. You don't think you get to read my column without homework, do you? Let me know some of your favorite movies of all time. From the fifties, sixties on through this year. Even if you haven't been to a movie in years, you and your sweetie-pie used to date, didn't you? Bet you went to a movie now and then. And if you're old like me, maybe you even took your little "lamb chop" to the drive-in theater. Kids today sure missed out not having the Drive-In Theater to go to. Next week, I'll share my top ten, YOUR top ten and maybe, if she's nice to me, Deb's top ten.
Till then, have a great week and email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call me at 319-334-4117. "We're off to see the Wizard..."
