Hearing on S. Tama $20.5 million budget is set for March 19

A public hearing date is set for Monday, March 19, at 5:30 p.m. for the South Tama School District budget for 2012-13. The board authorized the board secretary to publish the fiscal year 2013 budget estimate, showing a total budget amount of $20, 450,342 and a total levy of $17.68 per $1,000 valuation with a 8 per cent income surtax.

The board decided to proceed with the income surtax as this would affect every person filing taxes, and if only placed on a property tax, just those owning property would be affected.

The action came at the regular meeting of the board on Wednesday, Feb. 15 with all five members of the board present.

The board conducted a public hearing on Feb. 15 concerning the Instructional Support Levy.

There was no one from the public at the hearing, so the board voted unanimously to participate in the Instructional support program. The school board determined it is consistent with the five-year finance plan to fund the ongoing programs and services of the School District and it is in the best interest of the School district to participate and provide additional funding for five years, commencing the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013.

In other business the school board:

accepted resignations from Rose Wiese, 1st grade, Deborah Arp, vocal music and Sherry Tomlinson, elementary custodian, all effective at the end of the year. All three will take advantage of the retirement incentive.Tessa Gerloff, head 9th grade volleyball coach resigned effective Jan. 23, 2012.

The second readings of four policys, Gifts, Grants, and Bequest, Purchasing Policy, Purchase Order, and 803.25 Use of Credit Cards, were held and approved fooling discussion.

Jim Plantz activities director,, recommended South Tama continue participation in the sharing agreement with East Marshall schools for Soccer. The Board agreed this was a good idea as it had been successful so far.

A request has been made for South Tama to participate in a Sunday afternoon baseball game at Veteran's Stadium this summer. This was approved unanimously. Normally ball games are not scheduled for Sunday but this was a special request.

voted to approve the financial services agreement with the District and Piper Jaffray. This is necessary to proceed with the refinancing process.
