Vs. Benton Community
South Tama Freshman girls basketball team took on Benton Community on Dec. 19. As with the last 3 games, STC started out slow and found themselves behind after one quarter with the score 8-2 in favor of Benton.
STC got it going and outscored Benton in the quarter two.
Benton lead at halftime 15-12.
STC took their first lead of the game in the 3rd and lead going into the 4th 18-17. Both teams struggled scoring in the 4th quarter. Benton went ahead in the game by 2 points with 3 minutes in the game and held on to win 25-23.
"We played hard in this game but this was a game we could have won, " said Coach Julie Berger. "We made some mistakes at the end and didn't play smart but that just shows our inexperience. We will learn from this game and I promise everyone that we will improve."
Namomi Hoskey lead the team with 9 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. Erin Clayton had 6 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block. Sydney Upah had 4 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block. Sam Betz had 4 points, 7 rebounds and 1 steal. Kristen Upah had 1 rebound, Alexis Herrera had 2 rebounds. Shi-ann Fisher and Kiley Culbertson also played.
"I thought Sydney Upah played well for us. She is forced to play several different positions and puts in some valuble minutes," Berger said.
The 9th grade girls basketball team traveled to Grinnell on Dec. 6. Grinnell took an early lead after the 1st quarter with the score 14-5 and poured it on in the 2nd to lead 30-7. STC had problems handling the press and gave up too many easy baskets.
The 2nd half was more the same and Grinnell won the game 57-22.
"I was disappointed in the way we played and it shows that we have a lot of work to do," Coach Julie Berger commented. "I know we will work hard in practice and I know we will improve."

Naomi Hoskey had 11 points with three 3 pointers, and 2 steals. Sydney Upah had 4 pts, and 6 rebounds. Erin Clayton had 2 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal and 6 big blocks. Sam Betz had 5 pts with a 3 pointer, and 2 rebounds. Kiley Culberston had 2 pts. Kristen Upah had 3 boards and 1 block. Shi-ann Fisher had 1 rebound. Alexis Herrera had 2 rebounds and 1 steal.
THE?STC?Freshman girls basketball team played AplingtonpParkersburg on Dec. 15.. This was their first home game of the season.
STC started out a little slow and found themselves behind 8-3 after the 1st quarter. STC played better in the 2nd and closed the lead to 13-11 at halftime.
In the 3rd the Trojan girls tied the score and had the momentum going into the final quarter.
In the 4th quarter it went back and forth between the two teams. With less than a minute left in the game Erin Clayton was fouled and hit both free throws to put STC ahead by 1. AP came back and hit a tough 3 point attmept and that was enough to win the game 30-28.
"Even though we lost the game I was very proud of the girls. They played hard and showed that they are improving, " Coach Julie Berger said.
Erin Clayton lead the team with 16 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Naomi Hoskey had 6 pts, 2 rebounds, 1 steal and 3 assists. Sydney Upah had 2 pts, 2 boards, and 4 steals. Shi-ann Fisher had 2 rpts, 1 rebound and 1 steal, Sam Betz had 2 pts, 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Kristen Upah had 1 rebound. Kiley Culbertson and Alexis Herrera also played.
