Trojan JV girls basketball record stands at 8-1

The JV girls basketball team pushed their winning streak to seven last Monday night (Jan. 9th) with a 62-46 win over Grundy Center. The Trojans used a big first half and some pesky defense to fuel the win.

In the first half they put up 36 points and ended with 15 steals in the game. The team was led by junior guard Shelby Bradley with 15 points and Hailee Weiss added 10, while Trisha Walz and Regina Balderas each added 9 each.

The girls started their season on Nov. 18 with a big victory over Vinton-Shellsburg 48-22 and were led by Ameila Hoskey's 19 points including three 3 pointers.

In their next game the Trojans took on a very tough Waverly-Shell Rock on Nov. 22 and suffered their first loss of the season 42-40. At one point during the game the Trojans were down by 11 but battled back late in the fourth quarter to get within three points with less than a minute remaining in the game. Paige Van Dyk led all scorers in that game with 13 points.

On Nov. 28 the girls traveled to Eldora to faced off with South Hardin and ending up getting another big win 56-26.

Van Dyk had another big night and added 14 points, while Balderas chipped in 13.

The Trojans first home game of the year took place on Nov. 29 where they defeated the Grinnell Tigers 54-32.

Van Dyk once again led all scorers with 12 points, while Hoskey and Balderas added 10 each.

On Dec. 5 the Trojans took on East Marshall and came out with another victory 48-23. Walz had a double-double on that night with 15 points and 16 rebounds.

On Dec. 8, the girls took on BCLUW at home and outscored the Comets 24-0 in the third quarter to win 59-20.

Sophomore point guard Paige Van Dyk had another big night scoring 20 points.

On the final game before Christmas Break, the Trojans took on Aplington-Parkersburg on Dec. 15, and this turned out to be our toughest conference game yet.

The final score ended with very hard fought win for us 46-35. The team was led by Bradley's 12 points and 7 steals.

After a long break, the girls returned to action to take on West Marshall on Jan. 5 at home.

This was another very physical game, but the girls were able to come out with another victory 44-40.

Balderas led the team with 12 points and Walz contributed 14 rebounds.

The junior varsity roster consists of: Amelia Hoskey, Katelyn Behounek, Shelby Bradley, Samantha Magpie, Sherrie Marland, Taylor Ellenbecker, Emily Martin, Regina Balderas, Madison Baack, Tori Appelgate, Paige Van Dyk, Kyrsha Balderas, Trisha Walz, Hailee Weiss, Mollie Morgan, and manager Araceli Angel.

The girls will travel to on BCLUW on Monday Jan. 16 and return home on Tuesday Jan. 24 to face Wapsie Valley.
