STC boys JV basketball update

January 17, 2012
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

South Tama JV?boys basketball team has seen improvement but needs more "mental discipline" in the eyes of coach Jim Hall.

In a Jan. 6 game against West Marshall, Hall said, "This was probably our best effort yet. We were ahead 1st quarter 17 to 14 and behind by 2 at half.

"The second half we did not make as many shots and could not get our defense set up as we wanted and West Marshall got hot hitting quite a few 3's and ended up winning 63 to 40.

"However we now have something to build on and I think the kids might have bought into a system we could be successful with."

In scoring, Tyler Martens and Morris Zach each had 10 points with Austin Lowe adding 8, Jake Herriott 6, Nate Hala 4 and Tristan Beyer with 2.

Martens also snared 7 rebounds, Beyer and Darien Taylor each had 3, Hala and Anthony Keckler both had two. Austin Lowe and Drake Cherveny had one each.

Zach led with 4 steals and Martens had 3 assists to lead the Trojans.

Coach Hall had these observations following a Jan. 9 game against Grundy Center JV which the Trojans lost 53-27- "We have been talking with our team about being mentally ready to play in practice.

"We haven't solved that yet as we were down 14 to 2 early. That is a deficit which makes it very difficult for the remainder of the game. After the first run we settled in a little. Being mentally ready is something that has to be learned throughout the years and hopefully these kids do better in the future."

In that contest, Morris Zach led with 11 points, Tyler Martens had 5, with Anthony Keckler scoring 4, Darien Taylor 3, and Drake Cherveny and Taylen Anderson, 2 each.
